08:00 am - Baseball for Anime Fans

Kevin Standlee pointed out this Tank McNamara cartoon from the Sunday paper. I don't have Tank McNamara in the local paper (I think he is in the DC Post or Times), since I see him in one of the DC newspapers. Here is the actual link to the cartoon:

http://images.ucomics.com/comics/tm/2008/tm080323.gif

I think you will definitely enjoy this if you are into anime or baseball.

08:52 pm - Le Chevalier D'eon for a Hugo nomination question

I will be putting this on Hugo Recommends when I get a related question answered. I think the best series available right now is not Heroes, but Le Chevalier D'eon. I am wondering whether a historical fantasy would be eligible for a Hugo and whether the audience would vote for it over the current season of Heroes or Doctor Who.

This is the story of the show: A Gentleman of the French court in the 18th century has his sister die under mysterious circumstances. Her soul hasn't found peace, but possesses his soul. He goes on a journey to put her soul to rest and to find vengence for his sister death's.

It has great animation from Production I.G. and a great story from Tow Ubukata. The trouble I have in putting a nomination on hugo recommends is that it is historic fantasy and the audience seems very conservative in Science Fiction/Fantasy tastes.

Even if this isn't a Hugo nominatable season, you should really see this series. It has a great dub for those who have less experience in the world of subtitles. These are the two questions I have for the Hugo fans out there:

-Would this qualify under the WSFS constitution (I would think so under the broad definition)?

-Would people check out an anime to nominate this series? This show isn't on Television. Should I try Death Note (a very fantastical series) for the nomination in BDP-Short Form? I am putting the BDP-Long Form Hugo for Paprika.

08:48 pm - Anime Fandom and Negativity

I have noticed something about Anime Fandom and the Industry that disturbs me.  Ever sense Anime USA ended a couple of weeks ago and somewhat before that, there is this negativity growing inside the Industry and inside Fandom (especially those who buy tons and tons of DVD's).  I think people believe we are going to have a major destruction of the anime industry in the country where two or three major companies disappear into CPM land.

I do admit there is reasons not to be as positive as once thought (a 30% Decrease in DVD sales in three years to be the big one and no one trying to encourage Generation fansub to buy DVD's).  I think there is reason to hope.  A shakeup is going to happen in the industry whether it is Fansubs doing it for profit or a pay for download revolution or something else.  Change happens in all industries everyday. It may be that Anime needs a new method to making money because the DVD as main means of money making is dying.  I think the future of Anime fandom is in the character goods businesses.  Adults buying Code Geass models and Witchblade costumes.

What drives the traditional comic book business (Superhero comics) is not the comics themselves?  It is the intellectual properties behind them.  Look at the immense success of the Spiderman movies and their merchandise.  This franchise has brought in Billions of Dollars to Marvel.  Has it brought in new readers?  It hasn't brought in new readers as the Graphic Novel/Manga craze has to all comics especially Manga has.

Look at the most successful (money wise) anime properties Bleach, Naruto, Dragonball Z and Evangelion are driven by merchandising as much as DVD sales.  Evangelion is still producing figures, models, Manga and even fans a good 12 years after the first scream from Shinji Ikari.  Naruto toys are in the Rednecksville Target and Walmart.  I nearly gave a Naruto toy to the Aberdeen Ironbirds Christmas toy drive.  This is where Anime's future is and the better licensors (such as ADV, Funimation and Viz) are doing things to make money through not just DVD sales.  This is where our future is and it will take anime to the mainstream like never before.

We are going to see a Speed Racer movie and a Dragon Ball Z movie in the new year.  Hopefully Funimation and whoever has the license for Speed Racer anime is already thinking about how to make money on this new wave of interest.  What do the anime fans think?  Have I lost it or Should I just start accepting the end of anime as a business?

09:48 pm - Need Tech Help and an Anime

After doing laundry today, I watched Le Chevalier D'eon and was really impressed by the series. The series is about the story of D'eon, who is a knight in France in the French revolution times. His sister is murdered and he starts the hunt for her murderer. On the path to finding her killer, he has his soul possessed by her.

Production I.G. did an amazing job on this series, which is complimented by an excellent dub from ADV films. It is a well researched translation that gives a great deal of insight to the times.

I don't think this would qualify for a Hugo because it is Historical Fiction instead of Historical Fantasy. There was a real D'eon who dressed in drag instead of being posessed by her soul. This is by far the best anime series of 2007 released in this country.

The main reason I am posting is to ask for some help. I want to copy DVD videos to a VHS tape. I am doing a panel on Ghost in the Shell at T-mode and I am looking for help in transfering DVD video to a VHS tape. A VHS tape is easier to cue up and I have several clips to show about the progression of the characters from the Stand Alone Complex series. The series has brought out alot about these characters and I think it would be cool to talk about this for an hour panel. If you want to help out or can give me some ideas, please respond to the post or e-mail me.

07:57 pm - Just a weekend to relax

All I did this weekend was Church, watch the Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 2, Get some dealers attention for Anime USA and mow the lawn. It was that sort of weekend, but that is because of Otakon, San Diego Comic Con and Family reunion are on consecutive weekends starting July 20th. That is how busy those three weekends are. I consider it a good thing that I am relaxing now because come mid august I will need that break again.

I saw Hellsing Ultimate and it is just bloody. I am not sure that I really like the OVA series. It is an interesting piece of entertainment. I did know that the OVA's were very close to the Manga. I may move on from this series after this volume. I hope next weekend to see Ghost In the Shell OVA and Azumi. I hear those are very cool movies.

04:26 pm - A long slow day

I talked up to my boss at work and I am on the first day of a couple day suspension. It is totally my fault, but things like these make think about looking for another job. I must say daytime TV stinks. I am so ready for some local news or something to keep me from falling asleep.

I did watch some anime today, though. The first time I did that in a month because of cons, work and life. I finally finished Gunbuster. I throughly enjoyed the OVA, but there is still something missing without an english voice for Nuriko. I am an english language fan when it comes to Anime, but not live action foreign films and I have never figured out why.

Otakon and San Diego Comic Con are coming quickly. I will be going to Otakon for Saturday only because of San Diego. I hope to get to some panels and hang out with some Anime con runners. In a seperate post later, I will talk about San Diego more.

04:26 pm - Anime/Manga's stories for 2007

I saw something on The Beat that intrigued me and that I am going to try on my blog. It is based on these three questions. What was the biggest story or stories of 2006? What will be the biggest story or stories of 2007? What is your favorite guilty pleasure of 2006? The first two answers are based on what is going on in Anime/Manga. The last one is whatever you want it to be. I will go first.

What was the biggest stories of 2006?

-CLAMP at Anime Expo. It shows how much Anime and Manga are tied together in American Fandom.
-Four new original Neon Genesis Evangelion movies. Generation Eva will support these movies (if they are any good and get licensed.)
-The overall increase in licenses after a deep drop in 2005.
-Sgt. Frog finally being licensed.
-The success of American Manga such as Bizenghast and Dramacon (Harvey Award and Eisner Award Nominated).

What will be the biggest stories of 2007?

-Manga outselling traditional comic books in the mainstream market and Direct Market for the first time.
-Copyright issues where the MPAA and American Anime industry (most likely Viz or ADV) will start suing people and conventions for showing fansubs and not putting in strong enough protections in Artist Alley/Dealer's Room against Bootlegs.
-An Anime series will get nominated for a Hugo (The Science Fiction fan awards) in Best Dramatic Presentation-Short Form.
-The American Anime Awards will be a huge success on the web with voting and the presentation.
-A major convention will get one of these few Anime/Manga Creators as a guest: Hideaki Anno, Hayao Miyazaki or Kubo Tite.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure of 2006?

Mythbusters-That show should be on the BDP-Short Form ballot at the Hugos.

08:32 pm - Ironbirds and a Warning

The Ironbirds won their fifth straight tonight and I am glad. We now have at least a game and a half lead over Brooklyn in the Wild Card. It is going to be an interesting day tomorrow. I have some things to do on the computer, but I hope to get to watch some more anime.

I am thinking about going to the Baltimore comic Con next weekend, but I doubt it with every Ironbirds win. I want to warn those who are looking for Anime and Manga at that show. They advertise that there are vendors who will sell it, by putting Anime and Manga on it. Don't be fooled, they don't have an Anime or Manga dealers. I could be wrong because I did ask for a list of vendors be put up on their website.

I have been there before and that show doesn't have any of that. This year could be different because there are no major Anime shows next weekend in the US. The live action video dealers selling are selling Bootlegs. Yep, you can buy almost all of the series they are selling for less at Best Buy or Amazon.com. Those releases at those places are legitimate. They are studio supported releases and have much higher video and audio quality than the bootlegs.

They have a great guest list and the Harvey Awards, but don't go thinking you will find Go Nagai or Greg Ayers there or even legitimate Anime releases.

09:08 pm - Anime Next Report

I came back and had a mixed time. I think I would go out because the good outweighed the bad. Part of it was me doing planning for it so late in the game. Part of it was the logistics of the facility. Anime Next is a con that is in a convention center (61,000 sq. feet) and two smaller hotels meeting spaces (both under 10,000 sq. feet) in Secaucus, NJ. On to the actual report:

Getting There

That was half of the fun in this trip. The train there was suppose to get ther at 9:35 PM. It didn't get to Rednecksville until 10:20 PM on Friday. The reason why was that the electric lines were down near New Carrollton. I got to the hotel at about 12:30 AM and to bed at 1:30 AM. I slept on the worst Sofa Bed in the world and got pretty much no sleep.

Saturday

I got up from my insane non-sleep at 7:30 AM. I stayed at an Embassy Suites and because I was staying there I got free Breakfast every morning of the stay. That helped with the budget and I wish a hotel in Downtown Baltimore did that.

After Breakfast, I got into the Registration line at 8:20 AM and was near the front of the line. Registration was suppose to open at 9 AM. It didn't open until 9:20 AM. It did go quickly because people filled the sheets while waiting for Reg to open.

I went to Kevin Lillard from Fans View's panel. http://www.fansview.com is the website. It is a great website for pictures at conventions. I wish he would go cover a Worldcon or San Diego Comic Con. It was a nice panel and very informative. He is still going after his heart attack in January. He runs a website that shows convention photos and stories live from the convention. He does it through simple, reliable software and people who cosplay. Go see this even if you are not an Anime fan.

I then met Harold Sushiki (the creator and artist for the BECK manga). He is an incredibly nice individual. I am disappointed that I missed both of his panels for various reasons. I do want to get BECK and start reading the series. A series about a boy with a Guitar that isn't Gravitation has to be good.

I went to part of the Tokyopop and Funimation panels. Funimation wouldn't confirm that they had the Witchblade license, yet. I think it will be confirmed at Anime Expo. Someone leaked that information out at Metrocon two weeks ago. Funimation did confirm that they have a new movie from Gonzo called "Origin Spirit of the East". Tokyopop is so busy it would be difficult to put a list of their new acquisitions here.

I met and got an autograph with Kari Wahlgren. She is the voice of Robin from "Witch Hunter Robin" and is currently recording Saya for "Blood Plus" to be released soon by Sony. She is very excited about the role and is having a great time with it from talking with her this weekend.

I then went Rintaro's and Masao Maruyama. It was neat to meet one of the great director's and producer's in Anime today. It was a fun and informative panel. I saw a trailer for Kiba and it looks great. I wish I had seen it later in the day in the Video Rooms.

ADV's panel was next and David Williams did everything except announce a title. He said there was big time news coming at AX in 11 days. I got a manga from them for asking a good question.

Then, it was time to make the dinner decision before the Masquerade. There is a Houlihan's at the shopping area near where the convention was held. If you have never eaten there and get a chance to be in metro NYC, go eat there. They have this appetizer called 'Shrooms. They are breaded mushrooms with cheese in them. They are to die for and are the best appetizer I have ever had.

The Masquerade was a major mess. This event was a nuclear waste pile of horror. First of all, the event was suppose to start at 7 PM, but it didn't start until 8:48 PM. The people in there were not well behaved. They wanted their pictures on the big screen and they were unafraid to do anything including Yaoi jokes. Then, the masquerade was boring. I know most masquerades are boring and this one proved it, but get a MC who is funny at least to take the sting away. This was the first time I left a masquerade in the middle of it.

I saw "Bad Anime Bad" panel and it had a very bad anime called "Protectors of Universe". This show is the ultimate tribute to Leji Matsumoto gone wrong or the ultimate middle finger to him. I don't know which. I saw that part of the panel, but I was so exhausted that I gave up after that part of it.

I decided to get some sleep on the couch instead of the folding sofa bed. It was actually a decent night's sleep for rare evening at a convention. I am a road warrior, but I will never sleep in sofa bed ever again.

Sunday

I did some random things this morning including watching bits of some anime, AMV's and a couple of panels. I wanted to play "Evangelion" in the video game room, but after waiting 20 minutes after opening I gave up.

I went to the Dealer's Room and bought mostly books and Trading Figures with my limited money. All of the good DVD's were gone by the end of the day. The dealers were harder pressed to bring as much as they do at Otakon, but it was a good sized room with plenty for Anime fans.

I went to the train station and got an earlier train than originally planned. I got home around four hours ago. Tomorrow, I am going to write my suggestions for the con in a seperate post. Next weekend, I hope to have some photos of the cosplayers.

08:15 pm - Going to a con this weekend

I am going up to Anime Next this weekend. This is my last con until I go to Otakon in August. I am back as a gofer for Otakon. This is my third year and I enjoy it. I am not working this weekend at Anime Next. I have never been to this con before, so I don't know what to expect. I am not leaving until Tomorrow evening as I have a full day of work tomorrow ahead of me. I am glad for 9:35 PM trains on Friday evenings.

After this week, I am glad to be going away. I have had to hold this for the last few days and I haven't posted the minutes until it was confirmed on the website. Crispin Freeman is going to be at Anime USA in November. We are excited to be bringing the voice of Togusa, Renton and many other characters to the DC area.

09:37 am - Fake Worldcon Bid and Other Ideas

Balticon is a week in the past and I still have thoughts running through my head. I am glad I wrote about the con the night after it finished or I would remember almost none of it now.

This is what I am thinking about at the moment. As I mentioned in my blog for last weekend, I had two great ideas that I need some help from the Worldcon side of things. That floating crew of people who run the Worldcons in reality and provide the continuity equivalent of Otakon.

I am thinking about doing a Party Bid at the 2008, maybe the 2007 con for Aberdeen Proving Ground to host the Worldcon. This would be my first Worldcon and I would know no one at it. I am serious about throwing a good party bid. I have no clue about how to run one. Would someone from the Geneva in 08 or Hollister in 08 bids contact me?

The second idea I have is for a Hugo for Anime. I know it is a two part process where it has to be approved by LA Con IV and then approved by Nippon 2007 for it to become a Hugo. I have never written a constitutional amendment for any one's constitution. I need help in understanding how this would work. I can't find your e-mail address Kevin Standlee. Can you please contact me through my e-mail address on my information page or replying to this post?
