Need help from Veteran Travelers
I am going to Anime Boston next month. This is a last minute con and is preparation for San Diego Comic Con because I haven't been on a plane since before 9/11. I am very nervous that if I take the train to BWI that I won't have enough time to catch my plane. The planes would leave at 7:20 AM and 8:20 Am on different air planes. The trains would get to the aiport about 90 minutes before the flight leaves. I would have to take a short shuttle ride to the airport. Would 90 minutes be enough time to catch a plane? Would I be better off spending the $65 for a cab on the way their? I am asking the veteran travelers like Kevin Standlee and Fausti along with those who go to far away cons regularly (eva_whitley and psipsy) for their help. Thanks for their help ahead of time.

Ninety minutes may be cutting it too close, as the current recommendation is to get to the airport 2 hours before departure. I'm not sure how much of a "veteran traveler" that I really am, since all the cons I've ever gone to have been by car. If I ever go to AniBo, that likely wouldn't be an exception. (I'm going to AX this year, which would be an exception, but only because I don't yet have enough time off to make a road trip out of it.)

Did you look into taking a train to Philly and flying out from there? They might have more compatible schedules.

I have never taken the train to BWI, so I don't know their specifics, and your question is highly site-specific because it depends on how the individual airport works. However, I would consider 90 minutes sufficient when taking BART to/from OAK Airport (including the AirBART shuttle bus that takes about 10 minutes to get from BART to Oakland Airport proper).

While the official guidelines say two hours, you can often get by with less than that. I'm one of those who tries to err on the cautious side, which leads the Road Warriors sneering at me, because their motto is, "If you don't miss a few flights, you're arriving too early."

Mind you, arriving two hours early, and allowing for the time to get from the airport to the con at the other end, you're almost better off just taking the train to Boston -- if it were in NYC, I'd say definitely take the train.

How much are you taking with you? If you have only carry-on, 90mins would probably be sufficient (although it is cutting it close). If you have bags to check in, then I recommend no less than 2hrs.

It would be an hour or so more by train than by plane and traveling to BWI. It is also $60 more expensive and I can the train for $20 round trip from BWI. It does help me though in planning the trip part.

Not sure if you would want to do something like this, but since you have a couple weeks to spare, why not try and do a dry run?

In other words, take the train to the airport the time you are thinking about, and see what time you get to BWI, and then try and look to see how busy the airport is.

If you do get to the airport 90 minutes before your plane is schedule to leave, I would think that would be more than enough time to get through security.

When I traveled from Cleveland to either Boston and Anaheim for the Worldcons, I was able to get a ride to the airport in Cleveland, which is about twenty minute drive away from where I live.

Hope this helps!

Put as much stuff in your checked (NON cary on) baggage, bring your drivers ID, and easy to remove shoes.

Boston is really cool. There is a really good italian place right across from the Hynes convention center. can't remember the name, sorry. The Prudential mall has a nice food court in it.

From the Noreason web site (http://www.noreascon.org/travel/directions/index.html)

By Air
Into Boston
Logan International Airport (abbreviation "BOS") is Boston's airport.

Shuttles going to all the major hotels from Logan cost $10. There are multiple shuttle companies, each on a 20-minute cycle, so the wait between shuttles should always be less than 20 minutes. The trip from the airport to our hotels is about 30 minutes.

Public Transportation (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority). Take the free Massport shuttle bus (#22 or #33) from the terminals to the Airport subway station on the Blue line of the MBTA. To head toward our hotels, take an inbound train to Government Center station, then transfer to any Green line train going south toward Park Street station. Then follow our directions to the conference hotels. The cost is $1.25 from the airport.

There are taxi stands located outside each terminal. In addition to the base fare of $15– $25 there are surcharges for airport and tunnel tolls totaling $6. For more information, see Taxi Service from Logan Airport. A taxi to the Sheraton from Logan will generally cost $23–$27.
