07:22 pm - Sci-Fi Spectacular Report

I went to Sci-Fi Spectacular at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Geppi's Entertainment Museum today. I had a great day of geeking out. It was alot of fun between the both of those place.

Geppi's Entertainment Museum is a new museum that Steve Geppi started in 2006 to show his stuff off and celebrate popular culture. The museum has everything from Superman #1 to the original Howdy Doody puppets. It is a nice way to spend an hour or two in Baltimore.

The premier display is over two hundred different comics that he owns. This includes the first issues of many great characters from Spiderman to Sheena. There is also a display of Star Wars toys and so much more. You can't see it all in a visit. It is just wall to wall pop art and collectables.

After Lunch and some browsing at Waldenbooks in the Gallery, I went to the Meyerhoff. The musical spectacular did not disappoint with Star Trek, Star Wars and other Science Fiction music such as The Day the Earth Stood Still. I want to see that film in the near future. Hopefully, it will be part of the Films program at Balticon or Worldcon. I am not sure it is available in print.

I didn't expect George Takei (Star Trek's Sulu) to be signing, but he gave a great performance with the end of film speech from The day the Earth Stood Still. The two singers were excellent in their performances. One was from the World of Broadway and the other was from Opera. The female singer wore a Star Trek outfit for the first half of the performance. It was a fun day out.

One last thing in this post, George Takei will be a Guest of Honor at Shore Leave on July 11-13. It should be a cool weekend for Original Trekkers and the new generation of his fans who have seen him in Heroes. He doesn't do a lot of conventions, so it should be interested to see how people respond to him. It could be one of those weekends where you get a membership bump like when Neil Gaiman came to Balticon in 2006.
